.SHORT TERM...
(This afternoon through Wednesday)
Issued at 227 PM EDT Tue Apr 8 2025
No changes to the current frost/freeze headlines.
500mb analysis shows a longwave trough moving through the SE states
this afternoon. This trough will move east overnight with NW flow
aloft setting up through the end of the short term period. At the
surface, a secondary cold front is situated across portions of north
GA. This boundary will continue to push south through the evening
with high pressure building in from the north. High pressure center
will slide off the DELMARVA coast by early tomorrow with a shallow
wedge building in from the NE.
Wind gusts should diminish shortly after sunset this evening and
then go light NW. A wind shift to the NE/E is expected before
sunrise tomorrow as a wedge builds in from the NE. Winds should be
light enough overnight for some frost formation, especially in areas
along the GA/AL state line, where winds will take longer to shift to
the east and pick up in speed. Good radiational cooling is likely
and temperatures near freezing are possible across north and
northwest portions of the state.

.LONG TERM...
(Thursday morning through next Monday)
Issued at 227 PM EDT Tue Apr 8 2025
Key Messages:
- Isolated strong or severe storms may occur in northwest Georgia
Thursday afternoon and evening.
- Freezing or near freezing temperatures may develop in north
Georgia Friday night and Saturday night.
Next Storm System Thursday & Friday:
Scattered rain showers and thunderstorms should return to Georgia on
Thursday as the next upper level trough deepens over the Eastern
U.S. Ensemble trends favor northern Georgia for the highest
rainfall chances due to greater moisture availability and proximity
to the trough (better upper level support). Though not spectacular,
mid 50s surface dewpoints may be in place across north Georgia by
Thursday afternoon. This may combine with mid-level lapse rates (700-
500 mb) greater than 7 C/km and diurnal heating to produce 500 to
1250 J/kg of MUCAPE Thursday afternoon and evening. Note that this
degree of instability is heavily dependent on dewpoints recovering
into the 50s. Assuming that the instability is present, bulk shear
(0-500 mb) values near 50 kt indicate some potential for a couple
strong or severe thunderstorms. At this time the favored storm mode
looks to be isolated cells or small bowing segments, and hail or
damaging winds would be the main concerns. The SPC has highlighted
this risk my placing northwest Georgia in a Marginal Risk (level 1
of 5) for severe weather in the Day 3 outlook. The potential for
storms of any kind should decrease quickly as you move south into
central and southern Georgia.
Breezy northwest winds behind the passage of the cold front should
usher in cooler temperatures on Friday. Light rain showers and
mostly cloudy skies may linger over north Georgia during the day on
Friday due to the regions proximity to the upper level trough (which
will be lingering over the southern Appalachians). Thunderstorms and
severe weather are unlikely on Friday due to decreased instability.
The Weekend & First Half of Next Week:
As surface high pressure settles into the region on Saturday lighter
winds will develop and temperatures will bottom out. Afternoon highs
should be 7 to 12 degrees below seasonal averages. This equates to
lower 60s in north Georgia and upper 60s in central Georgia. The
potential exists for this forecast to trend down by several degrees
as both the EPS and GEFS means are slightly below the NBM mean. It
is possible that the NBM`s bias correction is keying on recent warm
weather and adjusting temps upwards to much. Frost and or Freeze
products may need to be considered for portions of north Georgia
Saturday night (odds of a Frost Advisory 45%, Odds of a Freeze
Warning < 20%). As we progress into next week temperatures should
gradually warm as the surface high shifts out into the Atlantic. By
Monday widespread high temperatures in the lower 80s are favored. No
precipitation is expected in the region between Saturday and
Tuesday.
